Dog of the Week: Jake
Age: 2 years
Color: Black, White & Tan
Breed: Pit Bull Terrier Mix
Gender: Male
Adoption Fee: $160
Hi there! I'm Jake, and if you saw me when I first arrived at the shelter in July as a stray, I don?t think you?d recognize me now.? I had a very bad skin infection and was missing hair and I was so sad, but the kind folks here have been taking good care of me, and I look and feel so much better! When you see me now you will note a look of some St Bernard in me. Everyone is impressed that despite my bad situation, my happy-go-lucky attitude and good heart are shining through. They are all hoping some wonderful family will recognize what I have to offer and the happy ending will be complete. I am easy on a leash and will sit/lay down on command. I am truly a diamond in the rough (and less and less rough each day- so check me out soon!)

Cat of the Week: Mox
Age: 3 years
Color: Black, Brown & White
Breed: Domestic Shorthair Mix
Gender: Male
Adoption Fee: $47.50 (reduced from $95)
My name?s Mox and I?m perched here and ready to leap into your heart!? I'm a very sweet boy who is looking for my forever home. I'm laid back and love to be petted. You can usually find me on this cat tree hanging out with my feline buddies in the Free Roam Room.? Why not come in and meet me? Maybe I can be your new BFFF (Best Furry Friend Forever).? P.S. I am a member of the Lonely Hearts Club because I?ve been here since July 2nd, and my adoption fee is half off!

Small Critter of the Week: Ron
Age: 7 months
Color: Black
Breed: Rabbit
Gender: Male
Adoption Fee: $50
Are you looking for a sweet, good-natured pal for company and affection? Why don?t you adopt me, a nice, calm rabbit who?ll provide lots of fun and love? Hi, I?m Ron, and I was given up to the shelter because my owner was allergic to me. I?m only 7 months old and I?ve got the softest black fur! I am patiently waiting for a new home, so if you think you might love a rabbit, come see me!

How to Get Reimbursed for Delays and Cancellations | Travel News ...

departuresboard1.jpg

American Airlines has been making headlines as labor and maintenance issues caused 430 flights to be delayed and another 53 cancelled in the past week?largely on flights in and out of Dallas/Fort Worth International. Besides waiting in long lines to reschedule, many passengers had to pay for unexpected meals, overnight stays, and/or transportation.

Will they be reimbursed? Depends what kind of traveler's insurance they carry?and, sometimes, what credit card they used to pay for the flight.

While American had a particularly bad week, they're not the only culprit. Southwest Airlines had 276 flights delayed last week, according to FlightStats.com. Altogether, 1,839 flights were delayed and 120 canceled in the U.S. last week, and another 3,773 were delayed in Europe. If you ended up with one of these ill-fated fares, were you covered?

World MasterCard covers trip cancellation up to the cost of the trip, but not expenses incurred by delays. Members of American AAdvantage frequent flyer program who paid for those cancelled American flights with the AAdvantage MasterCard won't get any help on expenses caused by those 430 delayed flights. Trip cancellation insurance covers trips cancelled by the passenger, prior to departure, due to death or illness. Passengers may have better luck hitting up the airline for expenses caused by a flight the airline cancelled.

Visa Signature does not cover trip delay or cancellation. Those who used the AAdvantage Visa Signature card are out of luck on either delayed or cancelled trips. Visa Signature cards, which also include United Explorer and US Airways, cover lost luggage (up to $3,000 per trip), car rental collision, and travel emergency and accidents, but not delays or cancellations.

Discover Escape covers both cancellation and delays. Your best bet for a reasonably priced card ($60 annual fee) that covers both delays and cancellations is Discover Escape. If you charge a delayed flight on a Discover Escape, you're eligible for up to $150 per day of food and hotel expenses for a scheduled trip on a common carrier delayed over six hours. Discover Escape also covers trip cancellation up to the cost of the trip, luggage reimbursement up to $2,500 per trip, and up to $500,000 in flight insurance.

American Express allows you to purchase add-on insurance for both delays and cancellations as an add-on. Premium cards, such as the American Express Platinum cover both, but you have to pay a $450 annual fee for the privilege. (Platinum comes with a whole lot of perks, so can pay for itself if you travel a lot.)

Dedicated traveler insurance covers delays and cancellations. If you do travel a lot, it might be worth paying for dedicated traveler insurance. Most policies reimburse you $100 to $150 a day for taxis, meals, lodging, and other expenses incurred because of a flight delayed by storm or strike. Some policies also cover pre-paid reservations missed because of the delay. Some, like Travel Guard and Savvy Traveler, allow you to purchase coverage for individual flights. But if you're going to pay $200 annually for insurance, it might be worth investing instead in a premium credit card that also earns you free travel and VIP treatment?airport lounge access, expedited security and boarding, etc.

Elite members get special treatment. If you're an elite member of an airline (flying 25,000 miles or more a year) you have more leverage with flight delays. According to WSJ, American Airlines recently emailed AAdvantage members, promising alternative flights if passengers discovered, on the day of departure, that they would arrive more than an hour later. American's website promises the same to other passengers facing a delay of two or more hours, offering standby seating on earlier domestic flights, full refunds if passengers cancel trips, and flights on other airlines or changes to American flights free of charge.

US immigration chief: Same-sex ties are family ties

By Miranda Leitsinger, NBC News

Same-sex couples will be considered ?family relationships? in immigration proceedings, according to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, a move that could help stem the deportation of those in gay or lesbian binational relationships.

Close family ties to the United States are a factor considered by authorities in deportation cases, and gay and lesbian advocates have long argued for same-sex couples to have the same immigration rights as opposite-sex couples.

?In an effort to make clear the definition of the phrase ?family relationships,? I have directed ICE to disseminate written guidance to the field that the interpretation of the phrase ?family relationships? includes long-term, same-sex partners,? Napolitano said in a letter.

Eight-four members of Congress signed a joint letter to Napolitano on July 31 asking for her to put into writing an order to prevent the deportation and separation of immigrants from their American citizen same-sex partners.

?One of those who penned the letter, U.S. Congressman Michael Honda of California, said Napolitano?s response, which he received Thursday night, heralded ?promising news.?

?In the wake of this important victory, we must take a step forward and continue the fight for immigration reform. Current immigration laws are tearing families apart and separating American citizens from their loves ones,? he said in a statement.??No one should have to choose between their spouse and their country, and no family should be left out of the immigration system.?

Gay couples, where spouse is a foreigner, sue over DOMA
Same-sex couple fights to stop deportation, gay marriage ban
For some gay couples, fight goes on to marry ? and stay in the US

There are an estimated 36,000 binational gay couples in the U.S. Two such couples have brought lawsuits challenging the Defense of Marriage Act, a U.S. law passed in 1996 that bars federal recognition of same-sex marriages and thereby denies various benefits given to heterosexual couples, such as the right to immigrate.

Rachel B. Tiven, executive director of Immigration Equality, called the announcement a ?huge step forward.?

?Until now, LGBT families and their lawyers had nothing to rely on but an oral promise that prosecutorial discretion would include all families. Today, DHS has responded to Congress and made that promise real. The Administration?s written guidance will help families facing separation and the field officers who are reviewing their cases,? she said in a statement.

Tiven was referring to the prosecutorial discretion laid out in June 2011, when ICE Director John Morton issued a memo requiring staff? to consider the circumstances presented in individual deportation cases, such as whether the person has close family ties to the U.S.

95% Searching for Sugar Man

All Critics (85) | Top Critics (28) | Fresh (81) | Rotten (4)

The search for a long-lost pop icon has an unexpected payoff.

[A] moving, lyrical account ...

Director Malik Bendjelloul's engaging, cleverly structured documentary about the legendary folk singer Rodriguez is shaped like a mystery.

If you like music, a good mystery or, better yet, a combination of both, you won't be disappointed.

An electrifying illustration of music's power to inspire and change lives on both sides of the footlights.

Submitted for your approval: one Sixto Rodriguez, a Mexican-American singer/songwriter whom Rod Serling would surely embrace, in or out of the Twilight Zone.

I was instantly hooked by this unique documentary...If you are a traveller on the road of life, don't miss this unforgettable treasure of a film

This is not only the best documentary I've seen this year, it's one that shows other documentaries how to do it.

Searching for Sugar Man reminds us that a wise man knows lasting riches are never the result of record sales.

Searching for Sugar Man" is a saga about the power of music, living life on one's own terms and the joy of second chances.

Two fans, Stephen Segerman and Craig Bertholomew, made it their business to find out exactly what happened to the singer Rodriguez. And, "Searching for Sugar Man" is the fruits of their labor. The fruit is tasting pretty sweet.

It starts as a bittersweet parable about the cruelty of commerce, but the wonder of "Searching for Sugar Man" will not soon slip away.

You watch "Searching for Sugar Man" at first fascinated by the mystery - what happened to Rodriguez? Where did he go? Then you become infuriated by its revelations of financial injustice.

An unexpectedly fresh nonfiction tale that rustles up deep feelings of a life stolen -- part docu-mystery, part uplifting valentine about the universality and resonating power of music.

Generates immediate interest in a forgotten artist, permitting the delicate yet barbed tunes to guide the experience, returning a sense of excitement to a man who unfortunately missed out on the highlights of his career.

It isn't that Searching for Sugar Man's plot developments are gotcha!-like, but this documentary does boast some bowl-you-over reveals best experienced blind.

Ultimately, for Rodriguez, musical redemption transcends the greed and soul-sapping breaks he encountered.

Rodriguez's life story is only part of what makes "Searching for Sugar Man" such a revelation.

The man and his music are worth checking out, even if the movie is not.

Ultimately an ode to Rodriguez's artistic modesty and the power of his music-a rousing crowd-pleaser that asks you to save questions for another film.

'I See Your Soul Mate': Sue Frederick Discusses How to Find the ...

By Bernadettle McCadden

Sue Frederick is more than just an author; she is an intuitive life coach who helps people get in touch with their spirituality and higher self. She uses this intuition to guide her through life and encourages people to trust their gut when it comes to making decisions. Her previous book, ?I See Your Dream Job: A Career Intuitive Shows You How to Discover What You Were Put on Earth to Do,? shows people how their specific birth date corresponds with the mission they were put on this Earth to do.?Her newest book,??I See Your Soul Mate: An Intuitive?s Guide to Finding and Keeping Love,? follows the same premise but focuses on romance instead. Frederick explains how you can?t truly find your soul mate until you are fulfilling your unique mission. She uses birth paths to help you recognize your strengths and weaknesses in relationships?and also provides other birth paths that work well with your own.

We had the chance to talk with Frederick about trusting your intuition to find the love of your life.

Your book focuses a great deal on discovering your own birth path before?focusing on finding your?soul?mate.?Can you briefly define birth path?and explain the importance of it?

We all come here to do significant work that helps our own soul evolve and also helps to raise the consciousness of other people. We have the potential to do something great, which is explained in the vibrations in our birth path order. That?s why we?re drawn to different careers and have certain dreams. Yet, when we get here, we buy into the negative messages that talk ourselves out of that greatness. At every opportunity in life, we can still make a choice to live up to that full mission, and that?s what?s in the birth path.

You talk about intuition as well.?How can you develop your intuition and make it stronger?

Intuition comes from our right brain, while logic and reason come from our left brain. We live in a world dominated by the left brain, which is good and bad. We have great advancements in technology, but we?ve lost touch with our spirituality. That?s why there is so much unhappiness in the world. As we each step into our right brain and trust our intuition, we?re able to get in touch with our higher self. We can really see our mission and begin fulfilling it, which is what attracts true love and helps us find our soul mate.

My favorite way to make your intuition stronger is daily meditation, which quiets your left brain and gets you into right brain consciousness. The Buddhists and Hindus figured out a technique thousands of years ago where you repeat a sacred sound, which they called ?a mantra.?

Related: Are You My Guru? How Medicine, Meditation and Madonna Changed My Life

Can you give us an example of an intuitive dating technique?

The minute that somebody asks you out, make sure you have a piece of their information, whether it?s their name, birth date or career. Write it down and put your hand on that piece of paper. Then, close your eyes and do a little bit of mantra meditation for a few minutes. You?re going to start feeling their energy. These odd little images, words or thoughts, which are about this person, will start popping into your subconscious out of seemingly nowhere. If the words are good, like sweet and loving, that means you should go out with this person. If the words are negative or you feel fear, it?s someone you don?t want to pursue.

The book?provides?readers with?birth path numbers that work well with?their own number. What would you say to people who are currently in love or with someone whose birth path number does not match their own??

There?s a lesson in that relationship. If you look at Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries, both are master soul paths 22 who came together with great work to do. Their relationship number is an 8, which is the number of power. It would?ve worked if Kris hadn?t become a conventional man who wanted Kim to give up her career and be a stay-at-home mom. Kris was abusing his power, and Kim could see that her life was going down the drain.

There is a lot of research we have to live through until we find our soul mate. I?ve had great passion and joy but also great heartbreak, and?I think it?s all been on purpose.

Related:?Is Dating Your Ex Off Limits?

What do you think about the ever increasing divorce rate??Are younger couples failing to find their?soul?mate?as older couples have done? Or are they simply more open to splitting up and starting over?

I think the vibrations of awareness have increased. You can?t just be miserable and hate your partner and not have it fall apart. It used to be that you could live a life in that negativity and never really wake up. Now, you get into that negative state and something instantly changes. You have to make a choice to evolve to your highest state and make the relationship work or to go on your own learning?journey?and find your own mission. If you?re really living true to your mission and highest self, you can find your soul mate and have that love last for a lifetime.

How can someone truly know if their partner is their?soul?mate?

It?s about how you feel when you?re with them. If you feel empowered to be your best self and if your partner is looking at you and seeing that greatness in you, even when you can?t see it, that?s a soul mate.

In your book, you share?that fear and worry prevent us from fulfilling our true mission and ultimately finding true love. How can people avoid this pitfall??

Meditation. That negative self talk is part of being in the physical world, but we can learn to override it with a positive thought. Say to yourself, ?Who am I to doubt myself? I came here with something important to do, and I brought gifts and talents to do it.? It?s not about the ego of doing your work; it?s about letting the work come through you to help the world. Once we can look at our lives this way, everything shifts.

You can purchase ?I See Your Soul Mate: An Intuitive?s Guide to Finding and Keeping Love? on Amazon.?You can also receive guidance from Frederick or get information on her live events here.

iPhone 5 will see Google Maps app by end of year: report

Google Maps could be coming back to the iPhone a lot sooner than any of us thought.?

By Matthew Shaer / September 26, 2012

Apple employees hang an iPhone 5 sign at a store in San Francisco last week. Google Maps may be making a return to the iPhone sooner than expected, according to a new report.

Reuters

The iPhone 5 was well-received by critics and consumers alike, with one major exception: Apple Maps, the in-house replacement for Google Maps, which had been a default app on the iPhone for years. Apple Maps, detractors argue, is a?"flop,"?a?"debacle,"?and?just plain?"ugly."?

One analyst summed up the problem thusly: "In the short term, Google has a better mapping application, and iPhone customers will suffer."

But maybe not for long. According to a new report in The New York Times, Google will release a new iOS 6 maps app, perhaps within the next couple of months, and almost certainly before the end of the year. The Times sources its article to "to people involved with the effort who declined to be named because of the nature of their work"; neither Apple nor Google has offered official comment. Still, this is one rumor that we buy.?

From the Times:

One reason that it will take Google some time to build the iPhone app: it expected the app with Google?s maps to remain on the iPhone for some time, based on the contract between the two companies, and was caught off guard when Apple decided to build a new application to replace the old one...?There are several complicating factors to Google?s development of the app. Google?s contract with Apple to keep the maps app on the iPhone had more time remaining, and Google did not know that Apple had changed its mind until Apple said publicly in June that it would replace the app with its new maps app.

In other words, this whole thing got sprung on Google, which is now playing catch-up. That makes sense. It also stands to reason, of course, that by the time Google gets together a new mapping app for the iPhone and iPad, Apple will have corrected some of the flaws in its in-house application, including the lack of transit directions and the plethora of glitches (check out this Tumblr for a compendium).?

Another thing to consider: Apple is going to have to approve any Google Maps app before it appears on any Apple product again.?John Paczkowski of All Things D says that talks between Google and Apple failed because of a spat over turn-by-turn directions ? and that Apple eventually decided to go with its own in-house product. Would the companies reach an agreement this time around??

Ask Eric Schmidt, the chair of Google. Speaking at an event in Tokyo this week, Schmidt said?Apple would "have to approve [Google Maps]. It?s their choice."?

Ann Romney explains Mitt's airplane window remark

Ann Romney said the air scare she had last week happened so fast there wasn't time to panic and recalled the details of the flight diversion, resulting in her plane making an emergency landing in Denver.

"I was just watching a movie and I could see out of the corner of my eye there were a lot of hustle and bustle going by me," Ann Romney told Jay Leno on the Tonight Show, "and all of a sudden my movie goes off and I turn around and I look at everybody and I'm like 'oh, there's smoke in the cockpit and there it was.'"

Get more pure politics at ABCNews.com/Politics and a lighter take on the news at OTUSNews.com

She explained her husband's subsequent comment afterward at a fundraiser when he joked that he didn't know why the windows on the plane don't open.

"It's his way of making light of how worried he is about me," she said. "It's his way of dealing with the panic of knowing how dangerous this was."

Mrs. Romney appeared for the first time on the sofa of the late-night host and also revealed that after she-amid criticism over her husband's campaign last week-said in an interview on Radio Iowa, "stop it. This is hard," that she at first thought she might have gone a little too far.

"I stepped out of the interview and I was like, 'oh dear, was that a little strong?'" she recalled thinking. She said since though "everyone I've seen has given me high fives."

Leno asked Mrs. Romney about the videotape of her husband's saying the 47 percent comment made at a closed-door fundraiser. She called the aftermath "frustrating."

"it's very frustrating thing because you try so hard to get your message out," she said. "You don't like those things to get misinterpreted as to what, why we're running and how strongly I believe and how important it is to what Mitt can bring to this country."

She added, "we care about the 100 percent."

Mrs. Romney said that four years ago she made a video tape and on the tape she looked into the camera and said, "Mitt, this is for you, sweetheart. I'm never doing this again."

She showed her husband the clips and he quipped, "you know, Ann you say that after every pregnancy."

Mercury surface resembles rare meteorites

Mercury has a surface unlike any other planet's in the solar system, instead resembling a rare type of meteorite, researchers say.

The finding, based on an analysis of data from NASA's Messenger probe, sheds new light on the formation and history of the mysterious innermost planet, scientists add.

Mercury, the smallest planet in the solar system, is also one of the least understood, having received much less attention from scientific missions than Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. NASA set out to change that when it launched the Messenger probe a little more than eight years ago. Messenger became the first spacecraft to orbit Mercury.

Past research based on Messenger data suggested a vast part of Mercury is covered with hardened lava, enough to bury the state of Texas under 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) of once-molten rock, scientists said. All in all, these mammoth floods of lava cover 6 percent of the planet's surface, an area equal to nearly 60 percent of the continental United States. They created Mercury's smooth northern plains between 3.5 billion to 4 billion years ago. [ Latest Photos of Mercury by Messenger Probe ]

Lava plains are common in the solar system. For instance, young Mars spewed lava all across its surface, and it still has the largest volcano in the solar system: Olympus Mons is about 370 miles (600 km) in diameter, wide enough to cover the entire state of New Mexico, and 16 miles (25 km) high, three times taller than Mount Everest.

Now, 205 measurements of Mercury's surface composition, made by the X-ray spectrometer onboard Messenger, reveal how much Mercury's surface differs from those of other planets in the solar system.

"Being the closest planet to the sun does mean its formation history would be different and more extreme than the other terrestrial planets, with hotter temperatures and exposure to a stronger gravitational field," says lead study author Shoshana Weider, a planetary geologist at the Carnegie Institution of Washington.

The surface is dominated by minerals high in magnesium and enriched in sulfur, making it similar to partially melted versions of an enstatite chondrite, a rare type of meteorite that formed at high temperatures in low-oxygen conditions in the inner solar system.

"The similarity between the constituents of these meteorites and Mercury's surface leads us to believe that either Mercury formed via the accretion of materials somewhat like the enstatite chondrites, or that both enstatite chondrites and the Mercury precursors were built from common ancestors," Weider said.

The researchers also looked at the areas around the northern volcanic plains. These surrounding locales are more pockmarked by craters, suggesting they are older, with more time spent getting scarred by meteor impacts.

The older terrain possesses higher ratios of magnesium to silicon, sulfur to silicon and calcium to silicon than the northern plains do, but it also has lower ratios of aluminum to silicon. These differences suggest the smooth plains came from magma sources that were chemically different from the source of the material seen in the older regions.

"The chemical differences between the northern plains and the surrounding areas, combined with the fact that the northern plains are younger by about 500 million years, tells us that the volcanic activity which produced the northern plains involved melting of different sections of Mercury's mantle, at cooler temperatures and at a later stage in the planet's history than the activity that would have produced the older surrounding terrains," Weider said.

The scientists will detail their findings in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Geophysical Research-Planets.

Burying the hatchet in the laser lab

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? Experts have been heavily discussing why exactly electrically insulating materials insulate as they do. Based on different mechanisms, a classification scheme for insulators has been in use since the 1960s -- a theoretical one. However, it has been yet impossible to distinctly classify all insulators due to a lack of suitable experimental approaches. A team of physicists from Kiel University (Germany) and the University of Colorado in Boulder (USA) has now developed a new method to distinguish different insulators unambiguously.

The study was published in the online journal Nature Communications.

No notebook, no cell phone, no digital camera would be functional without electrical insulators. The hunt for precise knowledge about state-of-the-art or future insulators is just as rapid as the development of new, better electronic devices. For this reason, insulator research is currently one of the hottest topics in solid-state science.

Following the common scientific procedures in physics, such insulators are first described using universal equations and simulated by computer models. The theoretical results about materials then need to be verified by experiments in the lab. It is this experimental verification that failed for a number of insulators in the past. ?For many years, expert discussions went round and round without any final answer about the insulator class," says project leader Kai Rossnagel from the Institute of Experimental and Applied Physics of Kiel University. The study presented now provides a completely new experimental approach to classifying the insulating behavior of materials objectively.

The science team made use of a special effect: some electrical conductors turn into insulators when strongly cooled down. At the same time, their electric state changes, and when the materials warm up again, their electronic properties also change. The scientists now use the speed of this change to distinguish different classes of insulators.

Inconceivably small time scales are applied in this method: For the classification, they use a laser beam camera to produce a film from individual images taken within femtoseconds. For comparison: If you took one picture every femtosecond for a period of one second, you would end up with 1.000.000.000.000.000 single pictures, while a regular film camera takes only 24 images per second. ?The electronic changes visible in the film, take about one to 50 femtoseconds for some materials and 100 to 200 femtoseconds for others," Rossnagel explains. In this manner, the scientists can distinguish one insulator class from another.

One of the heavily discussed insulator materials, titanium diselenide (TiSe2), was now precisely classified. On top of the precise classification of TiSe2, the scientists gave the first experimental evidence for a new class of insulators, the so-called excitonic insulators. ?We believe that our results may terminate the discussion about titanium diselenide after decades"; says Rossnagel but admits: ?Only after several years of cross-checking our results, we will know for sure if our method is as useful as we think now."

The new classification method uses a camera technique presented by the same team of researchers in the journal Nature in March 2011. It is called ?femtosecond time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy with extreme UV radiation." The current study was the first systematic application of the new camera technique to a scientific question. The study was carried out within the Kiel Nano and Surface Science, one out of four major research themes at Kiel University. It was funded on the German side by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF).

(AP) ? When you are a hot young starlet in Hollywood, you often get what you want. For Nikki Reed, that meant goose-bump calfskin, and for Chloe Grace Moretz, it was a menswear-inspired design. They are two of the celebrities to work with footwear designer Stuart Weitzman to craft shoes to their specs to help raise money for ovarian cancer research.

Weitzman has a long history of working with stars, and he finds many of them to be "frustrated fashion designers."

"It doesn't surprise me when they make requests or have ideas. They have a desire to create what they wear and what they look like," said Weitzman. "It would be surprising to me if they didn't want to have more input and try design."

The Young Hollywood Cares collection was co-designed this year by Moretz, Reed, Brooklyn Decker, Julianne Hough and AnnaSophia Robb.

Weitzman recalled Moretz's inspiration: "She told me as a kid, she would wear her father's wingtips and oxfords. ... And she wanted to make a shoe like her dad's that was sexy, high and wearable."

Other styles include Decker's gold metallic cap-toe black multistrap ankle boots, and Robb's black pony-hair stiletto pumps with burgundy satin piping.

This is the second round of collaborations, following last year's successful fundraising effort of $80,000, which was done without much promotion or publicity, Weitzman said.

"I want to be more visible," he said. "I have learned it's hard to ask people for money and it's harder to get them to give it, but if you have fun and make some noise, you can rattle it. You'll buy something, even if it costs a little more, but why not for a good cause?"

Proceeds from the collection benefit research at the Folkman Institute/Vascular Biology Program at Boston's Children's Hospital.

Cool Ideas For Running A Home Based Business! | Exact Article

If you really find this article helpful Give it a PLUS from below and help us to spread it.

If you manufacture your products yourself or buy them for cheap for retail, calculate your costs carefully. Establish how much your products cost you. Most business sell their products for twice what they cost, sometimes up to three times if these business are recognized brands. Do not be too greedy or underestimate what your products cost you.

If you have or are about to start a home business, be sure to establish an accurate budget. Many people fail at running a home business because they underestimated the cost of materials that goes with making or selling their product. For the best financial help, consider hiring an accountant.

Work within your interests. If you choose a business thought that you are less than excited about, you will not be putting in the necessary amount of time to implement it correctly. Choosing a business that appeals to you, will set you on the right track to having an enjoyable and successful business.

Starting and operating your own home business need not be a full-time job. Many small business owners have found that a home-based business can provide a sufficient cushion for building up their savings or paying bills. A part-time home-based business costs less to start up and requires far less risk than a full-time endeavor.

Set a work schedule. If you don?t make up office hours for yourself, you will end up working morning, noon and night. Allow yourself to have some personal free time and set a schedule similar to if you were working for a company. Your social life will still be intact at the end of the week this way.

A fantastic tip for your home business is to make sure that you keep track of your driving mileage for business specific travel. This may be a deductible for you as long as your keep accurate records and are able to back up the reason why it was directly related to your home business.

Find out what the laws are in your state and county, if you need a business license. You can check with a lawyer or an accountant if you like, but you should also be able to find this information online. Depending on where you live, and what you are selling, you may also need to collect state sales tax. Just make sure that you know and follow all applicable laws.

Post an ad on Craigslist to get leads for your home business. Many thousands if not millions of people crawl the Craigslist classifieds every day looking for local people who provide a quality service. Offer your services and a link to your website, so that people can find out more about what you to.

When you are starting up your new business, it is really vital to set up a separate checking account that is for your business only. You need to pay every expense from that account and deposit every payment into it. Make sure you have a separate business credit card also.

You will have to pay most of your taxes once a year. Make sure you save enough money all year long for your taxes. Calculate how much you will have to pay for taxes on a monthly basis and set this money aside. You can open a savings account for your tax money if necessary.

When considering starting your own home business be sure it is something that you have a passion for. Many hours a day will need to be dedicated to the success of your home business and if it is not something you have a passion for you are less likely to dedicate yourself to it.

Keep an open mind for creative budgeting when you start your home business. Sometimes income is inconsistent ? especially at first. You may find it helpful, for example, to change your bill paying schedule from bi-weekly or monthly to weekly if your home business is the sort that earns a bit of money every day or so rather than one or two huge paychecks a month.

Now that you are putting up your own capital for the operation of your home business, it is best to take precautions to limit your own liability. This may entail operating only on a COD (cash on delivery) basis, refusing to extend a line of credit to a new customer, or micromanaging your cash flow projections.

When marketing your home-based business, post fliers at local businesses as a way to get your name out there to the local crowd around town. Many people are keen to support home-based entrepreneurs over a large corporation and you will be well on your way to obtaining a larger customer base.

Have made or make a banner and logo for your business website. Carry this design through on your business cards, stationery, post cards, and fliers. Use an online printing service that allows you to upload your own artwork or choose one of their default designs. Just add your text, select the products you want and make your business brand.

Apply the information that you have read in this article to your business plot and you are sure to notice a tremendous improvement in the way business is going. Work hard, learn as much as you can and dedicate the necessary time to your business, then your profits are soon to come.

an-artists-journey-to-pinterest-and-etsy - Web.Search.Social. The ...

integrity studio interviewMore than a decade ago, Carl Christensen, then an advertising director and graphic designer, felt an instinctive pull to leave behind his corporate lifestyle and pursue his own craft. He shot some landscape photos and headed to a flea market with his wife, Ina. After selling a few hundred photos, Ina said, ?That?s where your heart is.? Carl took a leap of faith, opening his own gallery, Integrity Studio, in New Hope, PA. Integrity Studio was recently featured in Entrepreneur magazine as a small business that?s winning on Pinterest, and a 2013 calendar featuring Carl?s images compiled by Orange Circle Design, one of the world?s largest calendar producers, will be available in Target stores nationwide.

You started your business by opening your gallery in New Hope, but you?ve also taken advantage of online opportunities. Talk about the role that both the physical presence and online presence have in your business.

The online presence is a way for me to tier my products. One thing I learned from my corporate days working for Fortune 500 companies is that no matter what you?re selling, whether it?s an automobile or financial service, you tier your products. I knew that was important, but it was really difficult to do within the gallery.

My bread and butter within the gallery are very expensive murals and large handcrafted frames, so within the same gallery, how do I sell a $25 piece next to one of these items? We couldn?t figure out a way to do that, so we moved everything online, including all the lower end products. That?s how we discovered Etsy, which was the perfect venue for that, and that?s how we ended up promoting our Etsy store on Pinterest.

Having said all that, for right now, my online business will be a sidebar. I sold $4,000-worth of work today out of my gallery. The day I do that online, I?m going to sing the Hallelujah Chorus.

integrity studio interviewHow are you using Pinterest?

Pinterest is a vehicle that Etsy quickly adopted, and we saw this as a great visual way for us to try out our work, being able to monitor the number of hits that we were receiving, and determine whether or not a piece was worthy to put in the window at the gallery. We often base that on how well-received an item was on Pinterest.

One of my tactics is to find the most interesting and odd thing out there in the art world. I?ll pin it, and immediately after that, I?ll pin a piece of my work because the two sit right up there fresh on the pin board next to each other. Anecdotally, I can tell it works based on the referral traffic and analytics.

Pinterest is a way for me to let people know that there?s more to me than just my personal photography. This is a visual thinker, this is a person who appreciates good design and fine furniture, and this is a person who has a sense of humor. I have a whole humor section. I have a Pinterest board called ?Wish You Were Beer.? You can understand where my head is at when you see the things I pin there ? much to my wife?s chagrin. It?s a way for people to understand who I am without a bunch of words. When you go on my Pinterest page, you?ll get a feeling. You?ll get an overall sense of what I like based on the things that I?ve pinned.

Subversively, I?m selling you my products. I?m trying to play within Pinterest?s rules of not letting it be an overtly marketing site, but it is. I?m marketing myself and my work, but I?m not punching you in the face with it.

How has Pinterest impacted your business?

Pre-Pinterest, two-and-a-half years ago, Google was the number one way people would find me, and number two would be Etsy. Now, Etsy is number one, Pinterest is number two, and Google is number three. And Pinterest is responsible for a big part of our Etsy traffic. It?s huge as far as actual eyeballs.

I like the fact that if I pin something up there, those pins link directly back to a buying opportunity. It?s a call-to-action that goes directly to an opportunity to buy. We felt the impact more before everybody discovered Pinterest. We feel it a little bit less now but the numbers are still there. We?re obviously another fish in a much bigger ocean now.

Three creative passions drive your business ? photography, original paintings and handcrafted artisan frames ? three passions that require major time commitments. How do you balance everything with actually running your business?

It really comes down to which project will bring the most income to my family. I know that seems boring and business-like for an artist, but it?s the truth. I don?t cut my own mat board. I don?t cut my own glass. The reason why is each of those is a $1 or $2 item.

I outsource the least expensive things and put my energy and effort into the things that make the most money ? building a body of work, producing that work, scouting new areas, making the frames. The framing industry is ridiculously expensive. It might take me six hours to make a 30 x 40 furniture-grade frame, but I can sell that frame for $1000.

As far as creating, whether it?s a new painting or a new photograph, the truth is I don?t find time to shoot or create. The time finds me. I have four children in the house under the age of 9. My wife runs an online business. I run my online business and a brick-and-mortar gallery. If I have a two-hour window in the middle of the day, I can?t just decide it?s time to shoot and pick up my camera. The atmosphere may not be right, my mood may not be right and the lighting certainly isn?t going to be right. You?re really sort of stuck.

integrity studio interviewIf I?m having dinner with my family and I look out the window and see the most beautiful golden light I?ve ever seen, and I know how a certain tree on the top of the hill 15 miles away is going to look, I have to go. It?s time to shoot. As far as painting, if I?m in a bad mood, I don?t pick up a brush. People come into the gallery and say that every piece makes them happy. I never shoot or paint when I?m not happy because I don?t want that to come through in the work.

All of these things filter out a lot of the opportunities to shoot and paint. Thankfully, I have a large body of work. If I create one or two things over the next 60 days that I?m truly proud of, that would be amazing.

On your website, you say, ?Twenty years from now, we want a viable legacy we can hand over to our children.? What kind of legacy?

Both of my parents were orphans. I have no grandparents. My wife comes from the former East Germany and has very little family. Anything we can give to our four children ? because we had nothing given to us ? is our legacy, and we want it to be something they can be proud of. We?re all about the future and the next generation.

We would like very much to be able to give our children the opportunity, if they should desire, to take over where we left off. We own our gallery and try to build Integrity Studio on a brand of integrity. If they want to develop their own line of anything, they could put it up on a wall and sell their work.

The other day, my four-year-old said, ?Daddy, can I make a painting to sell at your gallery?? Of course she can. It?s sitting in the window with a $10 price tag on it. I want them to go to college and get a degree, but I don?t want them to think that?s their only choice if they want to learn to do something with their own hands. I?m very passionate about that.
