Deliver The Love With Mmmule: Let Strangers Carry Things To Other Places For You

Screen Shot 2012-04-20 at 12.00.30 PMI had to start braising the beef, pork butt and veal shanks for the tomato sauce. It was Michael's favorite. I was making ziti with the meat gravy and I'm planning to roast some peppers over the flames and I was gonna put on some string beans with some olive oil and garlic, and I had some beautiful cutlets that were cut just right, that I was going to fry up before dinner just as an appetizer. So I was home for about an hour. Now my plan was to start the dinner early so Karen and I could unload the guns that Jimmy didn't want, and then get the package to the Mmmule.com courier to take to California for her trip later that night. My plan was I had to get home and get the package ready for the Mmmule carrier to take on her trip. Then I had the cooking to finish at home, and I had to get Lois ready for her trip.

Doctors Can Practice Brain Surgery Without Actual Brains Now [Video]

Learning to do brain surgery isn't easy, as the procedures are often difficult even for experienced surgeons. So researchers in Japan have developed the Cybram 001—or Cybernetic Brain Artery Model—which simulates the functions of blood vessels in the brain, letting surgeons hone their skills without risking a patient's life. Sprint and LG launch Optimus Elite: entry-level specifications, planet-saving hopes

The successor to 2010's Optimus S, LG's readied another low-middleweight smartphone. Main features on the Optimus Elite include Android 2,3, a 3.5-inch screen, an 800MHz processor, NFC and a five-megapixel camera. So there's nothing particularly thrilling, but 50GB of free storage from Box could sweeten the deal for some. Eco-friendly nods include sustainable build materials, with 50 percent made from recycled plastic, with the hazardous likes of mercury, PVC and halogens also nixed from the device. Like other Sprint-LG team-ups toting green credentials, the charger ekes out minimal power when not charging the phone. Planeteers can pick up the Optimus Elite online -- in "Titan" silver and white -- from April 22, priced at $30 on a two-year contract. Sprint will also hand over a $50 reward card for your troubles and LG says the Optimus Elite will eventually arrive, at least in silver, on Virgin Mobile too. For a few more details, you can catch LG and Sprint emoting over Mother Earth in the press release below.

Trayvon Martin case reveals confusion over how Stand Your Ground works

In the wake of the Trayvon Martin tragedy, as well as the rampage last week in Oklahoma, some critics are now wondering whether Stand Your Ground has created a legal no man?s land.

Stand Your Ground laws were sold in US legislatures primarily as a victims? rights measure, to limit what many saw as prosecutors second-guessing situations where someone had a split second to make a life-or-death decision to defend themselves with force.

But in the wake of the Trayvon Martin tragedy in Sanford, Fla., as well as the racially charged rampage last week in Tulsa, Okla., some critics are now wondering whether the gutting of prosecutorial discretion in many self-defense cases has created a legal no man?s land.

George Zimmerman has claimed self-defense in the fatal shooting of Trayvon, an unarmed teen. Although reports Wednesday indicated that Mr. Zimmerman would be charged, the initial decision by police to not arrest him spurred protests and threats. On Monday, for example, an empty police car was riddled with bullets near the scene of the Feb. 26 shooting.

In the Oklahoma case, part of the motivation for the rampage may have been a police judgment about self-defense in an earlier incident. Oklahoma has had a Stand Your Ground law since 2006. In the shootings last Friday, two white gunmen wounded five random black people, killing three.

The way that Stand Your Ground laws have operated in these cases ? particularly the Florida one ? has offended many people?s sense of justice. In their eyes, it even signals the changing of a basic social compact, as they wonder whether the government has the tools to properly administer street justice.

At the least, the cases have revealed confusion among both the police and the public over how Stand Your Ground is supposed to work.

?The waters get muddied because a lot of this legislation changes the burden of proof and standard of review,? says Steven Jansen, a spokesman for the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys in Washington, which has opposed tenets of the Stand Your Ground laws. ?Before, you would have an objective standard: What would a prudent person have done in a similar situation? And now, it?s more of a subjective test: You have to get inside the mind of the person that has used deadly force.?

Pushed by pro-gun-rights groups like the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the American Legislative Exchange Council, Stand Your Ground laws seem simple on their face. Under such laws, legally carrying citizens have no legal obligation to retreat from a dangerous situation, and they need not fear prosecution if they reasonably meet force with equal or deadlier force to protect themselves or someone else in public.

In the mid-2000s, the US public was ready to listen to that logic, according to a study of the laws by the National District Attorneys Association. Events including 9/11 and hurricane Katrina had shaken Americans? sense of security, and many felt that the justice system could not adequately protect crime victims.

But as the Trayvon Martin case has taken twists and turns, it?s become clear to many legal experts that the Stand Your Ground concept has many inherent ambiguities, undermining faith in the justice system in the process.

At a legislative task force last week on Stand Your Ground called by Florida state Sen. Chris Smith (D), it was ?clear that there was lots of confusion around the statute,? even among seasoned police officers and prosecutors, says Jo?lle Anne Moreno, a former federal prosecutor and now a law professor at Florida International University in Miami who is part of the task force.

?The fact is, we haven?t had this law for that long, and we?re still working with it, still trying to figure it out,? she says.

In fact, of the nearly 100 Stand Your Ground defenses in Florida since 2005, the majority were successful ? suggesting to police that the benefit of the doubt should primarily go to the person claiming self-defense.

"If police expect and anticipate there might be a Stand Your Ground defense, they're specifically instructed to act with much more deference," says Professor Moreno.

Stand Your Ground legislation also seems to have played a role in the Oklahoma rampage. That became more apparent on Monday, when one of the two suspects, Jake England, admitted that he was in a depressed and vengeful mood in part because of the circumstances of his father?s death in 2010.

Carl England, the alleged shooter?s father, was fatally shot by a black man who had threatened his daughter and tried to kick in the door of her home. That man, Pernell Jefferson, was charged with robbery and weapons offenses, but not with homicide ? after police determined he acted in self-defense after being hit with a stick by Mr. England.

?Today is two years that my dad has been gone, shot by a [expletive n-word],? Jake England recently wrote on a social networking website.

In 2009, Florida prosecutors used Stand Your Ground to decide that a homeowner who shot (but did not kill) an unarmed neighbor, Billy Kuch, in his front yard would not be prosecuted, since the homeowner had felt ?threatened.?

"I have no problem with people owning guns to protect themselves," Bill Kuch, Billy' s father, told The Washington Post. "But somehow, we've reached the point where the shooter's word is the law. The victim doesn't even get his day in court. I don't think most Americans realize it, but that's where we are." http://www.oregonlive.com/newsflash/index.ssf/story/stand-your-ground-laws-coincide-with-jump/a3790f550b3adad2fbf3730fe6976180

For their part, supporters of Stand Your Ground and other gun laws say many of the reactions to the Trayvon Martin shooting smack of political opportunism.

Officials should not be ?stampeded by emotionalism,? Marion Hammer, an NRA lobbyist who helped write Florida?s law, told The Palm Beach Post. ?This law is not about one incident. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the law.?

Others are more skeptical.

The problem is, ?you lose faith in the legitimacy of the justice process if you feel cases are unresolved or resolved in a way that suggests a sort of unfair or biased result,? says Moreno, the former federal prosecutor. ?At a very sort of basic level, [these laws] change how we view the sanctity of human life. If we?re allowed to shoot somebody for reaching into your car to grab a purse, does it mean that we don?t value human life the way we thought we did??

Johnny Depp sued by disabled woman

Gonzalo Fuentes / Reuters

By Natalie Finn, E! Online

News flash: Not every woman wants Johnny Depp to tear her clothes off.

In a lawsuit filed Monday, the "Pirates of the Caribbean" heartthrob has been accused of directing his security detail to forcibly remove a disabled woman from her VIP seat in Depp's vicinity at an Iggy and the Stooges concert. She claims she was moved so roughly that her clothes were "disheveled" and her shoes came off, and another time so that her pants came down, "exposing her buttocks" to other concertgoers.

The "Bully"-championing star's camp hasn't yet responded to a request for comment.

The woman, identified solely as Jane Doe in court documents obtained by E! News, claims that before anyone laid a hand on her, Depp's guards tried to prevent her from returning to her seat and relented only when she explained she had left her cane with her husband and couldn't make the trip upstairs to get back via a different entrance.

She states that she and her party then noticed Depp and his security detail "huddled and speaking to one another" while glancing at her. The complaint alleges that Depp was "supplying direct supervision and management of his security guards and directing their current and future actions."

Actions which, according to the plaintiff, included grabbing her wrists in an attempt to grab her iPhone out of her hand, dragging her to an upper balcony area of the VIP section and prying her phone from her hands "one finger at a time," trying to handcuff her after saying they were off-duty police officers, and then dragging her on the floor through the Hollywood Palladium, causing her pants to fall off her torso and hips.

Jane Doe, a medical professor at UC Irvine, states that she suffered "injuries to the extreme and outrageous humiliation" at the hands of Depp's team -- who, she claimed, was entirely aware that she was disabled and aware of what his team was doing.

She says that she went immediately to the emergency room and then to the police station to be examined and have "the facts of the incident documented." The suit does not explicitly state that she filed a criminal complaint.

Depp and the Hollywood Palladium are being sued for unspecified damages for a list of offenses, including negligence, assault, battery, false imprisonment, intentional infliction of emotional distress and discriminatory practices in public accommodations.

'Mad Men' Takes A Turn For The Geeky

AMC series nerds out with 'Lost' references and Ken Cosgrove's sci-fi novel about a robot and a bridge.
By Josh Wigler

All right, AMC, if we didn't get it before, we certainly do now: You dudes are a bunch of nerds.

No one is going to argue that point what with your record-smashing "Walking Dead," or the developing series based on "Dead" creator Robert Kirkman's "Thief of Thieves" comic book. But all those many, many geek references on this week's "Mad Men"? Consider the message received, loud and clear.

What, you missed the '60s-set drama's absurd amount of nerd-out moments last night (April 15)? For good measure, then, we'll walk you through them all.

"Mad Men" season five draws major attention for "fattening up" Betty Draper actress January Jones.

First and foremost, the episode, titled "Signal 30" and directed by series star (and "Iron Man 2" actor) John Slattery, heralded the arrival of science fiction and fantasy novelist Ben Hargrove, the pen name for ad man Kenny Cosgrove (played by actor Aaron Stanton, already a fixture in geek culture for providing his voice and likeness to the lead role in video game "L.A. Noir"). Previously operating in secret, Ken's private passion was outted by Cynthia, Ken's all-too-forgettable wife who is suddenly a whole lot more memorable when you realize that she's played by Larisa Oleynik, formerly the titular shape-shifter on '90s Nickelodeon series "The Secret World of Alex Mack."

Cynthia (or is it Cheryl? Like Don's new wife Megan, we can't really recall) spilled the beans on "The Punishment of X4," an old story of Ken's, during a dinner party held at Pete and Trudy Campbell's home. Her description of the plot: "There's this bridge between these two planets and thousands of humans travel on it every day, and there's this robot who does maintenance on the bridge. One day he removes a bolt, the bridge collapses, and everyone dies."

"There's more to it than that," a nervous Cosgrove tells the hushed room. Don pushes for further details: Why does the robot destroy the bridge? "Because he's a robot," Ken answers, clearly encouraged by Don's interest. "Those people tell him what to do and he doesn't have the power to make any decisions, except he can decide whether that bolt's on or off."

"Or he just hates commuters," Pete quips in response.

Ken's fledgling career as a sci-fi novelist wasn't the only nerdy reference at the Campbell family's eventful dinner: Texas college sniper Charles Whitman was briefly misidentified as Charles Widmore, a clear Easter egg for "Lost" fans. Indeed, "Lost" co-creator Damon Lindelof (who already enjoyed a shoutout to his six-season sci-fi series earlier in the evening on "The Simpsons") took it upon himself to further flesh out Cosgrove's "X4" through a series of fan-fiction tweets. Well worth a read from the man behind the DHARMA Initiative.

Later, at the same dinner, the faucet at Chez Campbell burst for the second time in the same episode, prompting Don to remove his dress shirt and get to work on fixing the sink. The heroic action drew immediate Superman comparisons from the onlooking housewives, which is far from the first time that Jon Hamm has been connected to the Man of Steel.

Superman is a "young man's game," according to "Mad Men" superstar Jon Hamm

Meanwhile, on a subtler note, Pete Campbell took a turn for the super-villainous this week. Aside from being completely shown up by Don's ability to fix a sink in seconds, Pete spent the episode flirting with and fantasizing about a high school senior in his driver's education class, and later having sex with a prostitute, but only after she switched into king-worshipping role-playing mode. He even got into an intense fist fight with fellow Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce partner Lane Pryce; usually the consummate British gentlemen on the AMC series, don't forget that Lane is played by Jared Harris, who also appears as science terrorist David Robert Jones on Fox's cult sci-fi series "Fringe" and recently enjoyed a celebrated turn as legendary villain Professor Moriarty in "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows." Pete clearly hasn't seen the aforementioned show and film, but he nevertheless learned the hard way (and by hard way I mean via serious ass-kicking) that you never, ever get into a knockout brawl with Dumbledore's son.

All of this served as a reminder to me that Pete, whose views on Don oscillated between hero worship and pure spite throughout the episode, has known about Draper's secret identity for several seasons now. With his latest turn toward the dark side, can it really be much longer before he uses that bit of proverbial kryptonite against the artist formerly known as Dick Whitman? Only Matt Weiner knows for sure.

Finally, we return to Ken's side-career as a writer, news of which spread throughout SCDP like wildfire. After a scolding from silver fox playboy Roger Sterling (played by the aforementioned Slattery, whose own Roger got his groove back a bit in this week's episode, albeit to mixed results for his company), Cosgrove was persuaded to let his alter-ego Ben Hargrove go, but not before Peggy Olsen was able to read one of Ken's short sci-fi stories, "the one in Galaxy about the girl who laid eggs." (Lindelof has titled the story "Ova," though whether or not he tweets excerpts from the yarn remains to be seen.)

But where Ben Hargrove dies, Ken is reborn anew as Dave Algonquin, writer of "The Man with the Miniature Orchestra." The episode closes with a reading from Cosgrove's latest effort: "There were phrases of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony that still made Coe cry. He always thought it had to do with the circumstances of the composition itself. He imagined Beethoven deaf and soul-sick, his heart broken, scribbling furiously while Death stood in the doorway, clipping his nails. Still, Coe thought, it might have been living in the country that was making him cry. It was killing him with its silence and loneliness, making everything ordinary too beautiful to bear."

Ken's latest written effort isn't exactly nerd-worthy, no, but it's the perfect example of why it's so fantastic to have "Mad Men" back after a year and a half, geek call-outs be damned.

Image
Having already debuted in the UK, Roku is officially undertaking the second stage of its international attack plan by taking on a new region of North America: Canada. Given the box's roots and popularity as a Netflix streamer it's no surprise that the international rollouts just happen to be in English-speaking countries where the service is available, but there's more to be had, since Roku says it's launching with more than 100 channels north of the border. Hardware-wise, Roku is kicking things off with two of its higher-end players in the Roku 2 XS and Roku 2 XD. Both can handle video in resolutions up to 1080p and feature built-in WiFi while the XS throws in a gaming remote plus Ethernet and USB ports just like their US counterparts. The XD and XS can be has for $89.99 ad $109.99 CAD, respectively, either online from the usual sources, while London Drugs and Walmart are expected to offer them at retail by the end of the month. There's a bit more detail on the launch channels in the press release after the break, we'll expect more firsthand impressions from our Canadian friends once the NHL playoffs are over.

Dolby Labs and Philips unveil Dolby 3D tech, want to deliver glasses-free 3D in HD

Dolby Labs and Philips debut Dolby 3D tech, want to deliver glasses-free 3D in HD
Dolby helped the 3D revolution happen in movie theaters years ago, and now it's teamed up with Philips to do the same for TVs, tablets, laptops and phones. The two companies have created a format and content delivery technology, dubbed Dolby 3D, to bring high definition 3D content to any and all devices with 3D displays, including those that don't require glasses. Its secret sauce automatically optimizes video for different screen sizes and also upgrades half-resolution 3D to full-res. The idea is to provide both broadcasters and OEMs with a way to deliver 3D HD content to customers buying Dolby 3D devices, while remaining compatible with existing 3D gadgets. All that's left is to actually build some hardware that'll let us see all those snazzy suits from Mad Men in high-def and the third dimension.

HTC fixes rare One S chipping finish issue, swaps phones for free
The black HTC One S uses a process called micro arc oxidation (MAO) to harden its aluminum unibody and make it feel like ceramic. We've recently experienced some chipping on the finish of one of our review units, so we reached out to HTC to find out if this is a known problem. Turns out we're not the only ones to report the issue, and while rare, the company's gone ahead and tweaked its manufacturing process and is offering to swap affected phones for free for existing customers. Here's HTC's statement:
HTC is committed to delivering a high quality product and great experience for all our customers. There have been a few, isolated reports of this issue. The finish on the One S was laboratory tested as being at a hardness similar to ceramic. While that's hard, it doesn't mean it's impossible to damage. Regardless, HTC takes quality very seriously and are providing all customers with an immediate fix and we are implementing some small changes to ensure customers do not experience this issue in the future.
